Volunteering is a unique opportunity to experience first hand sea turtle conservation by working alongside the local team to relocate nests, maintain the sanctuary and lead initiatives in community and education, fundraising, communication, ecotourism and much more.
Internships & Collaborations
Internship placements offer educational credits for students and researchers who want to collaborate with us on-site or remotely, as a Sanctuary Assistant or Remote Conservation Intern. All fields of study are welcome, though students on biological, environmental & social, tourism, communication and marketing paths are well applied.
Sea Turtle Sanctuary Assistant
Sanctuary Assistants join our on-site team and live in the rural village of Juluchuca. Assistants are actively engaged in all our operations, and with tourists and visitors alike. They lead community-conservation projects like caring for the sanctuary, incubating turtle hatchlings, education programs, team coordination and much more.
Remote Conservation Intern
Support La Tortuga Viva from anywhere in the world! This position is designed for those with proficient research, writing and organisational skills, as well as a well-established strategy and ability to be self-led prior to beginning the role. It is a multifaceted role designed to help out with outreach, communication, networking, fundraising and social media.
Important Information for On-Site Volunteerinng
La Tortuga Viva is looking for motivated and skilled volunteers and interns, especially young conservationists in their early career. We can’t provide insurance, transportation to and from Mexico, or cover other personal expenses. Volunteers are welcome to fundraise for their position to provide themselves with a living stipend to cover additional costs (note: cost of living outside position’s benefits run 100-200 USD per month). Volunteer roles depend on availability, location, experience, and fulfillment of basic requirements:
- Commitment of at least 4-5 months
- Fluency in English and Spanish
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
- Positions are unpaid. We do not charge any fee to volunteer with us.
- Accomodations and 2 meals per day are provided
